GEOLOGICAL AGE: Upper Jurassic

(150 million years old)

STRATIGRAPHIC FORMATION: Solnhofen Plattenkalk (limestone)

LOCATION: Eichstatt, Bavaria, Germany

DESCRIPTION:  This is a gorgeous and exquisitely prepared example of an Upper Jurassic primitive ray-finned fish derived from the world-famous Solnhofen limestone of Eichstatt, Germany.  While only one species (Amia calva) of the Amiidae family survives today, additional species of all four subfamilies have been found in the fossil record of the Jurassic, Cretaceous and Eocene Periods. The magnificent preservation as noted in this specimen derives from the anoxic environment of the vast Jurassic ocean which covered this region of Bavaria at that time as well as the finely grained limestone matrix within which this fossil was preserved, capturing exquisite detail and, at times, soft body parts and skin/feather impressions.

This fossil is centered in the upper half of the matrix, with the body curving upwards and the mouth, agape. Bodily details are beautifully preserved, including all fins, the tail and the skull.  The specimen rises from the specimen in relief and exhibits a golden aura which surrounds much of the fossil. This is a superb and rare museum quality specimen for the discerning collector which combines both scientific rarity with exquisite preparator skill.
